Kapet,Bukit and Gunung

We came a long way, riding to Kapet to bukit ( hill) now to gunung ( mountain). The bike pushers indeed came a long way since my inaugural ride with Yazid where the slope near his house seems like an impossibe task,then to kapet after few attempts because we struggled to ride to Kapet and also couldn’t find the way to the peak under the leadership of one of our bikers,then came Penang hill, Cameron highlands and now to Gunung Jerai! I got up at 5.30am getting ready and waited for Yazid at 6.15am near my apartment and both of us headed towards Dinas. Dinas is our normal Teh Tarik & Roti Canai joint after out numerous Kapet rides. One by one came; Hock Hin, Sufian, Poh Tat, KS, KB, KL Chan and we drove towards the bridge with Victor whom we met near Bukit Jambul, Esso kiosk. Zamri, Sufian’s friend met us at Jerai foothill followed by Idris,his family and his friend with his little cure daughter made up the numbers. We reached Jerai after a detour and got ready for the ride. The usual photo sessions took place as it would be our prized possession followed by few trash talks before hitting the trail. It was an immediate uphill for a while with a steady gradient climb. We started counting the milestone by each kilometer. Yazid was leading the pack with PT,KL,Victor,KS,KB with Zamri and I riding side by side. Sufian and Hock Hin were never insight, so I mocked the rest that this is the first time that we overtook both of them.I spoke too soon as a few minutes later I saw sufian and Hock Hin besides me and we rode for a while till both of them probably would have said they had enough of trailing behind the rest. They dissapeared leaving Zamri and I to paddle on. Half way thorugh I saw Yazid, sighing from cramp, we waited for him to recover and continued. The last few kilometers were a bit straining for us and we reached the 3rd kilometer mark till the peak near the forestery department and it was a sign of relief yet I could not see the rest of the members, probably they would have reached the peak by now. We reached the peak and we were mesmerised by the beautiful view overlooking the plateau below Jerai. All of us were so immersed by the nature’s gift to mankind. We had a hearty lunch and took more photographs. Idris and his friend reached later and we salute their determination to ride with the little girl as a passenger,bravo Idris!
KS and PT need to head back earlier so they parted way folllowed by Zamri. We stayed on for a while for more photos session and started the downhill ride. Wow...what a feeling,Sufian is one hell of a downhill rider as within few minutes he dissapeared as I saw him racing down ahead of me. I was the last one to ride down as I was trailing two Pajeros’ which were very slow with the descend and I was disspointed that I could ride faster as I need to trail behind them all the way. Sigh! We packed up and congratulated each other for a good ride and headed back home with a smile on our faces, it was definetly on Yazid’s and mine. To reminience our maiden ride till the Jerai ride we can say we have achieved that many riders would only dream of! So now BP, what’s next ?

Not sure why I signed up for this ride, but I guess I needed it to cool off after a very hectic and demanding week. This ride was really a "cool" experience. For 1 thing, it rained, I mean really rained. I knew it gonna be tough because it was suggested by Kee, and we'd be following Wong Kona team. But because the team E/F pledge "you go, I go", I was obligated to go (thanks KB...). Good thing, the E/F team stuck together, as sweeper team, all the way.

Our ride up was interrupted by heavy rain several times. The longest was at the serai (lemon grass) farm. I personally thanks God for the needed breaks.

It started raining again as we reach the top, at Kee's aunt house. Despite the damped/cool/wet ride, we were given warm welcome with hot kopi O, tea, fried beehoon & mee.

The rain continued for some time and we had to waited quite some time to get Kee's clearance to ride down. Kee's family offered Tiger Beer & roasted pork to keep the team warm. Chun Chiat skillfully rode downhill, not too sure if it was because of his new bike or the Tiger Beer.

Some rider rated it as the best ride, I think because after all that nice treat from Kee's family, they also got some packed some pau & fruit for us to bring back, just in case we got hungry cycling back.

Malaysian Gold Jamboree (MGJ)

Location : Bkt Merah
Trail type: 40% tarmac, 50% offroad/mud and 10% water Distance:~40-45km Participants: KT, KW, James, Yew, Kee, Azydee, Yazid, Sufian

Overall it’s a good day, the ride took us thru palm estate, kampong road, around Bkt Merah lake and flooded road (at 1-2 feet deep but 90% rideable!) and the final steep climb (one and only). The biggest turn-out, >2000 riders despite the earlier report of bad weather. Intially we want to canx the trip, but decided to proceed as we have a good back-up plan, i.e. waterpark or Jerai mtn. perfect weather, but the trail was tricky especially inside the palm estate because of the slippery mud and the water flow. Anyway here are some hilites:-

• Azydee using skinny tires, he is now the “master drifter” drifting most of the part during muddy trail
• We were the last riders, even the sweeper finally zoom away, gave-up waiting for us…but after 10km or so we pick-up the pace and overtake >300 riderz
• Hock Hin’s slipped and fell fr the trail bank, swept by the water current while holding tight to his XTC, but was saved by one of the marshall who jumped into the water, grab hock Hin in the nick of time. He pull Hock Hin out while Hock Hin clasped his XTC’s grip, iron fisted.
• At the flooded road stretch, Yazid accidentally hit a potholes (that he cudn’t see because of the flood) while his camel-back sippers in his mounth…the sudden jerk forward resulted in his front tooth crashing the sipper’s
• Yazid was in top formed, outperformed most of the riders, conquered the final big hill descent eve outperformed one superfit muscle guy who succumb to muscle cramp after overtaking yazid
• Another lucky draw winner fr Bike Pushers, in fact there were 2 of them, a red metal 1 fulcrum wheelset and XTC XS frame

• And we end the event with our very own throphies…huge, tall and mighty sweet and sinful Swensen icecream.

Weekend Rides-Gertak Sanggul & JMJ

Sat: Gertak Sanggul rides was fun, it has a mix of everything, climb/fastrolling/technical/bend/switchbacks…not too much and not too little depending on how u ride it. We felt sorry for Chun Chiat for not able to complete the rides due to component malfunctions, but I think it is a sign fr up above… We were also joined by a Nathaniel fr Hudson, Mass. This is also the come back rides for Hanely, and sorta for KB too (last weekend rides up carpet was anticlimax so didn’t count).

Sun:Jerai MTB Jamboree. KT, Yew, Azydee, Nathaniel and Sufian joined the 1st jamboree of the year. Huge participant…a sea of riders(>1600, not including ghost riders…). Plenty of stories to tell, but suffice with pix for now, as a start…we have another BIG lucky winner!!

We, the BP mountain biking team celebrated New Year 2011 with style! We rode to Queensbay Mall to watch the New Year fireworks celebration. Everyone else went there by cars or motorbikes. We were able to bypass the traffic jam and the police blockage because of our eco-ride. After the celebration, we had our first supper of the year at Dinas Nasi Kandar restaurant for "roti canai" and "teh tarik". Wishing everyone a Happy and Prosperous New Year!

Blue Mountain

Ride time without stop : ~ 3 hours

Start - 7:15am, End 12:30pm

Trail: Indian Temple->Carpet->Rapid->Titi Serong->Hill Turn->3 Towers->Blue Mountain->Relau Hill->Alor Vista->Metropolitan Park->Sungai Ara.

We started at 7:00am today, quite a big group, about 25 person riding to carpet. A large number of people stayed on (18 to continue to three towers and blue mountain.

There are a few ladies who join us today. We push our bikes through muddy slopes, thick undergrowth and tricky down-hill tracks meat for hiking. The ladies did really well, without any hick-ups. A large group of people join the bike pushers today. Most guys are strong riders and was leading the trail most of the way.

Praga's maiden around the island ride

I recruited a new member recently and he bought his bike on Saturday morning,on the 2nd Oct 2010, a Giant XCT 2 and rode with me for the first time around the Island! That's right guys he rode around the Island and managed to complete it as well. The plan to ride on Sunday was dampened by the rain and he communicated with me at 6am asking if the ride is still on,shows his interest and excitement. After a few texts with Azydee, we agreed that Azydee will go ahead with his bro-in law and Arthur and I'll ride later with my friend. We left Sg Ara at 8.00am and reached Balik Pulau at 9.00am and had our breakfast at rapid bus stop. I asked him if he wants to turn back or go around the Island, he said let try around the island, as no one amongst our Bikepusher's has attempted this challenge. We paddled on along Teluk Bahang, Batu Ferringgi, and made it to Sg Ara at last. He is a great rider and certainly shall be part of our "A" lists of riders, sorry guys I seems to be recruiting the wrong guys to our team,those who refuse to push bike.Welcome to bikepusher's gang Praga!

Kapet and 7 Corners Ride

Yesterday I met up with KW,TEE,KB & Yazid for an easy ride, so we meet up at temple entrance as usual and we took the wooden bridge trail, which was okay to ride after a while. We rode till reached Kapet and rested as other riders were ascending one by by. Was chatting with Wong and his team who are planning for Balik Pulau ride hence forth. We decided to come down that's when Tee suggested we go 7 corners, I some how convinced Yazid about this route as he was reluctant to go,knowing little about it, as I thought it would be a downhill ride till Dinas. Little did I know what it was after reaching the foothill of 7 Corners. Oh...boy was it tough steep uphill trail as usual we ride and pushed our bikes except for KW and Tee who even took a second round ride in 7 corners as the rest of us were struggling to reach the peak.These guys are killing machines man. Anyway it was tough ride for me personally but I wanna do it again to improve my stamina before the round island ride.

Solo Mini Nibong Tebal Jamboree

You may call me silly,crazy or even mad...I did a mini Nibong Tebal Jamboree solo! It started as a normal ride when I left my mum's house in Nibong Tebal at 7.00 am. It was suppose to be an easy road ride, when I reached a junction of Bukit Panchor and Sungai Kecil, I took the one heading Sg.Kecil till the road branched into Kg.Besar and Sg.Kecil so I took the Kg.Besar road until a T-Junction, indicating left to Serdang and right to Kg.Besar. I thought since it is a easy ride to take the Kg.Besar until I reached a familiar sight Hutan Lipur Nibong Tebal ( Forest Reserves) as it was one of the tracks during the NT Jamboree. Well how difficult could it be, easy ride mah!
Little did I realised that it headed straight to the hilly trail, so I thought why not just try a while and decide later to head down the same way. Boy, did I got absorbed in the ride, a little further took me to the entire first hill...decision time,shall I turn back or continue riding. I decided to press on and the trail looks very familiar, this was the same route that gave me my muscle cramps! I told myself I am going to enjoy this time as I missed the fun going downhill during NTMBR!So I decided not to let this opportunity slip by! I continued riding, through the places where I meet Yazid during the ride, where I had my cramps, where I pushed my bike both uphill and downhill with cramps.It was a not a easy ride for me as my bike now weigh 2kilos and my shoe another kilo after gaining red earth as it rained yesterday. This time I was having a fun filled ride going downhill and uphill and I let out a victory cry after completing all the downhills! Little did I realised that my victory cry after all the downhill rides I missed earlier. It was short lived victory cry as at the palm oil plantation I could not find any indicators for direction. I took a wrong turn which led to a dead end and U-turned to re tracked the trail and after few tries managed to come to a junction of two routes,I took a risk with the one heading downhill, lucky for me it led to some NTBMR indicator. I followed the indicators till I reached the Kampong again and finally to the main road and reached home at 9.50am. When I think back of this expedition only did I realised that how silly I was doing this ride solo! Anyway it was a all fun!

2 Hills Ride

Last Sat ride was excellent, we (David, KS Foo, KT Tee, Ling How, Hock Hin, Tick Siang, Hanley) managed to conquer two hills, reverse blue house and carpet. KS Foo and David fell when riding down from Carpet. I think it was due to wet road condition as it rained the night before. We need to be extra careful when riding downhill especially in wet road condition.

Today 3 of us (Poh Tat, KL and Hanley) rode two hills as well i.e. reverse blue house and reverse carpet. We met Kalidas at Carpet! We rode down together and had breakfast at Dinas.

Next Sat plan is to ride to Ginger Farm and then to Malihom, meet at Temple entrance at 7:30am. At Ginger farm trail, you can enjoy the beautiful landscape of the entire Bayan Baru, Bayan Lepas, Batu Maung areas, the Penang bridge and the sea horizon. Spectacular beyond words! Have to see it yourself...... the only way to see it is to ride it.... yeah! At Malihom, there is a trail down to Balik Pulau and very near to Bukit Genting (optional).

Lonely Ride

Today I rode alone to Kapet as my visa was revoked yesterday and I texted Hanley to my disappointment. On the way to the temple entrance I saw James riding towards Dinas saying that he's going to meet some friends for breakfast and promised to meet at Kapet later. It was a lonely ride but it was fun as I took my time in reaching the peak which was suprisingly fast. While resting waiting for the rest to come, I met Boon another rider from Butterworth and while we were chatting and exchanging telephone number I saw Hanley approaching.I was surprised as he did two hills yesterday and today he did the same with KL Chan and Poh Tat. He is among the stronger riders amongst us as you know that his partner in crime is KW and Wong! Terror mah!
James and his friends joined us at kapet and it was getting more crowded as many other riders joined us. Boon's friends came one by one as I realised one of them was from my home town. After saying goodbyes Hanley,PT,KL and I came down with Hanley took us into a different routes of twist and turns till we came to the wooden bridge. It was a fun ride and later we feast at Dinas and parted for this week exchanging wows to meet next week. Hanley....where to next week...looking forward.

Wow! What an adventurous trip at Nibong Tebal today. Those who missed it missed the fun. It was supposed to be short trip with Option 1 (Chicken Loop) but it became an "eagle" loop, from 6:30am and back home at 3pm! All visas were fully expired, big time. Many missing appointments, one missed appointment with wife and mother in-law!

It was raining heavily at 5am and we were wondering whether the trip was on. A few SMS were flying around to confirm the trip. Luckily the rain stopped at 6am. We met at Dinas at 6:30am and had our breakfast and left for Nibong Tebal at about 7am.

The ride was full of adventures as follows:

- Due to some navigational technical issues (not clear about the directions and handphone GPS ran out of battery!) we were riding around like eagles hovering the sky, round and round. We rode 55km with riding time of 3 hour and 40mins. This was longer than the Jamboree itself!

- It was drizzling when we started riding. The first 3 hills was fun. In crossing a small river stream, KB fell down. It was a small and slow fall. Nothing serious.

- Since we were on this Jamboree trail, we decided to go for the 4th hill (the ultimate hill). We had to cross a deep trench with gotong royong effort to transfer each bikes across. We took some photos. KT will upload it. During Jamboree, there was a bridge. They removed it.

- Pang Gyee's friend was experiencing cramped leg. We had to slow down.

- Arthur had an accident. There was a cement speed bump in one of the downhill slope and Arthur came down too fast, he and his bike literally flew up in the sky upon hitting the bump. Unfortunately he did not land on the ground well. His hand and leg were scratched. First aid was immediately applied.

- We stopped by a stall and had a quick bites for lunch.

It was worthwhile…few additions fr my perspective:
- The downhill 2nd and 3rd hill were exhilarating, I hammered the sections actually did get few air time…I got such a buzz!
- The ride is a mix of recce and revisit of the NTMTBA, actually I kinda enjoyed it because was visa was until 4pm
- Get to know KB lil bit more as we were car pooling...bro, your round island “iron” maiden ride is…I cudn’t find a word for it…

- Few thank you’s

o Pang Gyee for the breakfast, without it I wudn’t have the energy to finish the chicken loop
o Arthur for the cold iced 100plus, now the pak Haji at the mosque wudn’t be able to drink 100plus for few nights

Last Saturday was indeed an adventure to remember J This was actually the only week of my riding career did I complete two “Jamboree” in less then a week. The first was the actual Nibong Tebal Jamboree on 1st August while the second was our very own Bike Pusher Jamboree last Saturday. In between the two, I went for two carpet rides on Tuesday and Thursday!

The day started out for me early at 5:30am on Saturday morning. Woke up and it was raining heavily. And what do you do when you see rain early in the morning… you go back to sleep J That was what I did. Thanks for Tee who reminded me of our ride with a phone call and was kind enough to pick me up from my place and we met the rest of the gang at Dinas.
After a quick breakfast, all of us are charged up and ready. We reach the entrance of the Dam at NB and unloaded our bikes. Here is what I think was missing from the rest of the summary:-
1. Since there was no toilet around, we “relive” ourselves at a nearby river before starting our journey (the fish is not going to like it)
2. KB was hungry from the start and we gave him a banana called “Raja Cheow” in Hokkien for King of Bananas. He got a buzz after that.
3. Notice that Pang Gyee friend can really ride and was trailing behind Sufian most of the way
4. Many rambutan tress and I help myself with a bunch of really tasty fruits.
5. The three hills was great with some really exiting moments downhill. Phang Gyee got something in his eye but luckily was not serious.
6. Yup, you heard it all. I fell hard going down hill just before going up the forth hill! I had a bad scratch on my right leg (around the knee) and my elbow, my thigh is badly bruise and my 5 years old daughter describe my leg as a “Monster Leg”. What is worse is that injection the doctor gave me for tetanus was worse then the fall. My left arm actually feels more painful then my leg and hand combine!
7. After the fall and Phang Gyee’s friends leg cramp we have decided to go for the “chicken hind side” oops I mean chicken loop J Anyways, the rain has motivated us to speed up our decision
8. The “shortcut” was incredible. Close to 28km worth of on road with full of heavy vehicles back and fourth, wind resistance that can challenge hurricanes speed as well as Phang Gyee nearly got hit by a oncoming car!
9. Stop for a quick 100 plus drink and a driver in a Merc stop and ask how are we (I guess all of us look a little half dead)
10. My injured leg felt like someone is hitting it every time I cycle thru the 28km stretch. One of the stretch was a hill of probably over 5km long! Sufian suggested that I stop and pick me up later after they have found the cars. I decided to press on and take the pain No Matter What.
11. KB had a ipod that kept him motivated at all times. Unfortunately he has only one earphone.
12. We stop by a small stall at the side of the road for more drinks and snacks. Sufian had laksa, cucur udang, the rest of us had curry puff’s, popiah, cakes to name a few. This was one of the best meal I had that week probably due to the fact that I nearly fainted from hunger and pain and the food just look soooo gooood.

Anyway here are some of the guys that I like to thank:-
1. Tee for not giving up and trying his best to bring us back to our cars safely despite none of us really know Nibong Tebal and the route well and all of us being tired.
2. Hanley who applied first aid to my leg and hands
Hi Hanley, the thing you applied is a miracle. The pain from the doctor’s injection was worse then the fall!
3. Sufian for making sure everyone is around and no one is missing
4. KB for riding with me way behind during the chicken loop stretch and motivating me when I was in pain
Did I miss out anything! Well, this is definitely a day that I would not forget anytime soon. I suggest it goes into our bike pusher blog as an event to remember.
So guys, when are we going to concur the forth hill? I am all in for it.

NTMBR10

It was a fun filled ride for some and painful ride for others as some of the riders had severe cramps during the ride including our Sifu! Yesterday some 10 members of Bike Pusher riders participated in the Nibong Tebal Jamboree organised by USM.We gathered at USM by 6.45am near the School of Electrical and Electronics parking lot and after gearing up we were at the starting line with Arthur,Tee and Hock Hin at the beginning of the starting point and Yazid, Azydee,James and I somewhere at the middle with Idris and others nearby. Some 1600 riders took part in this event, the initial 100-200 meters was a push rather than a ride. The ride was fun until we reach a small hill where the traffic came to a stand still as most of the riders need to push uphill. We rode for a while and we pushed for a while after couple of hours came a downhill spot which apparently was the favourite for all riders as it was a long ride with smiles in all the riders faces! Fantastic ride that was, then came the set back for me, while descending the slope near the "Stone Garden" where few riders fell and injured themselves. I had a severe cramp, in both my legs, I could not move at all and I stopped and stood for a while as both my calf muscles contracted. I waited for at least 5 minutes to get down from my bike as i could not move my legs..man was it painful. Two riders helped me to come down from my bike and I just lied down by the side awaiting someone to help..a kind rider offered his deep rub lotion which I applied and rested for 20-25 minutes. I continued the ride in pain and stopped a few times as my legs could not fight the cramps until I reached the 3rd checkpoint asking for help and they directed me to the medic team,who helped me to apply some spray. He asked me to stop and take the truck as I saw few riders taking the truck ride back. I told him no as I wanted to complete the jamboree by all means cramp or no cramp. I rode slowly until I reached the finishing line at 12.20pm! I met with the rest and there was where other shared that they had cramps as well, James,Idris and Kee the Iron Man!Congratulation to all especially to James and KW for participating in their first Jamboree.KW, as I have told you before Jamboree is akin a walk in a park for you and you proved me right!I now see all our BP Riders are getting better and stronger as times goes by.Till next Jamboree, rest well!

Double Riding Dose

Today was an unique ride for many of the bike pushers who did not have enough of the ride...seriously. Everyone felt that our first ride this morning was too easy. Well the story goes like this...Yazid,Kie,his family members and I registered for the Balik Pulau 14 KM ride sometime ago. So we gathered at Kie's house as usual to mount our bikes on his lorry, ver kind of him and set off to Balik Pulau by 6.30am. It was an event organised by CAP ( Consumer Association of Penang) to cultivate riding culture amongs the young, i guess it is also part of their go green initiative. Anyway the crowd was made up of some few hundred school children with some grown up "children" like ourselves. Met Idris & family, Suffian, Suri and other familiar riders as well. We waited for flag off which didn't come at 7.30am as scheduled. It was at 8.30am after numerous speeches. The kids had the most of the fun with their mini bikes racing against adults with mountain bikes or road bikes.
Met two new members KC Ong and Prem ( whom I've played futsal with Yazid & kids before). Suffian offered his bike for me to try out, men..I was riding his Iron Horse and he tried my Proton T-Bolt..yeah belief it folks. Suffian actually rode my bike & i rode his.Guys...let's admit machine does makes the difference and not just the "engine" as we have discussed! I was on cloud nine, riding passing by many riders and before I know it I was among the front runners following the police traffic car. "Potong steam betul " as KC puts it as they were frustrating all the riders, who were poking fun of the police car as we need to follow the car from behind which frustrates the rides. Before we knew it, the ride was over, we collected our certificate and told ourselves that this is a too easy of a ride. Suffian and team wanted to scale Pulau Betong and Gertak Sanggul but since Prem and KC were with us we decided to head back and try out Kapet. We talked them into taking this challenge and we scaled Kapet with James and it was fun to see these two new riders making it to Kapet on their first maiden trip. So we have successfully recruited two new Bikepusher members who fulfill our first criteria, the ability to push the bike while scaling Kapet and they came out with flying colours. KC was a pro as he was giving James a run for his money and Prem was not far behind either, well coached by Yazid the "King of Chains". Congrats to both of you hope you'll join us our other rides in the future or even better still Jamborees!

It was an interesting ride this saturday morning as some 40 over riders congregated at the temple entrance at Sg.Ara trail. It was interesting event as I was expecting the usual riders for this fun filled ride but 40 riders! Wow what a number.
Met many riders that we have not seen or rode with for sometime; Idris with his family and gang,David, Ling Haw,Tee,Yazid,Weng Kit, Yew,KL,Pang Gyee,Suffian and many others that I could not remember their names. The most important person on this ride is Hanley, our official photographer who did a splendid job with with his photographic skills. There were a few stop overs along the way to take photos. At the plantation cross Tee proposed to take the reserve Kapet route which was seconded strongly by Ling Haw and some 8-9 riders took that route which proved to be a scenic ride with some difficult sharp turns.We re-grouped at the foothill to Kapet where we took two more shots; one pushing our bike which was a criteria for another shot of us riding. Took another group photograph with our birthday boy, Suffian before Pang Gyee and I parted with the rest of the riders as our visa time ran out!It was fun fill ride with friends I would say! Happy Birthday suffian, wish all your dreams may come alive especially your future biking adventures.

Time: Total 4 hours (8am to 12 noon)

45 min ride, 15 min push; 30 min eating markisa, 1 hour looking for durian, 30 min eating durian, 1 hr misc activities (make special drink, burn bee hive, eat worm, buah pala, lime).

Once again, Kie is the man, for being a great host.

Recce: Blue Mountain, WW14

Recce Blue Mountain's trail, an off-beaten path, followed by the well known and respected Chan Kon Tze>3 Towers>Hilton>B.Pulau>Bkt Nyonya>Bkt Dato trail. Blue mountain live-up to it's name as all riders almost turned to blue by the time we reached the 1st peak at the temple. Uphill climb fr the temple to Kee's Auntie house are marked by steep single track thru scenic terraced mix vegetation, i.e. ampula/ambra, lime, kantan, lemon grass, and many more, and of course the blue sky. From Blue mountain we pushed/carried our bike thru banana farm and ocassional steep ledges (downhill!?) to arrived at the Buddist Hermitage center where we have "panjat pagar" before finally out to the 1200 steps temple route. From then on is the familar challenging Kayuh Lasak route. Enuff said, enjoy the trail elevation details and the pictures.

Some editorial notes:-
- Bkt Dato’s scenic is more awesome at night/early morning. Excellent trail even for a leisure weekday ride…an alternate other than carpet (plus they serve drinks and food at the permandangan indah R&R)
- Pondok Upeh climb is very challenging due to single track and killer gradient—uphill Skill, concentration, power and endurance is required to clear the trail. At least 3 pit stop is required to normalize heart rate and muscle fatigue. And I lost count on how many ‘wheelie’…but I have the priviledge of witnessing the most “elegant wheelie” and uphill roll…remind me of “Jack and Jill”
- Trash talk…ah the best, even before the ride started the trash talk already at full throttle…
- …the dog’s bark turn to whimpers as the never seen such bright lights..i guess they were afraid that they might get abducted.
- ..new Valet service are now open for business…anyone?

Perlis Jamboree was a pleasant suprise. The event was very well organized and there was plenty of sponsorship. To start with, the goody bag has a free cycling tumbler, isotonic gel, a can of 100 plus, trail map, elevation proflile and program schedule. The volunteers manning the refreshment center will even peel the banana for you! We throughly enjoy this trip. Congratulations to Ling How on completing his first Jamboree event. I am happy to report out this is also the first Jamboree all team members manage to complete without any bike issues. (Bad luck are a thing of the past)

What a memorable ride:

1. Biggest turn-out from bike pushers yet or at least for this year. KT, Arthur, PT, Yazid, Kalidas, KL, Chun Chiat, David, Yew, Weng Kit, Sufian, Chuen Hau, KB.
2. Not only riding in the dark, but it was an off-road and technical climbing-- rocky, rooty, grooves and pot holes. We always wanted to do a technical climbing in the dark, but doing it at night is too risky.
3. Hats off to Arthur, ride leader and KT president for choosing the reverse Blue House trail because ALL OF US were able to enjoy the sunrise because the trail face west (…or did Arthur chose that route because of item#2 above?). Had we choose the other routes, few of us wud have missed it
4. We brought coffee…it is not entirely about the ride, but about food/drinks, camaraderie, conversation, sharing which is our bike pushers trademark…oh yeah, lastly “gaya mesti ada” (pix’s coffee mug on the bottle cage)

Today Yazid, James and myself went out for a ride;the route: reserve blue house, kapet and back for breakfast. There is a twist to this story as the King of Chain did it again, yes..yes yes. He did it for the 5th time...a record for any biker in "Bike pushers gang". I guess you'll know who he is?
As usual we tried to repair the broken chain, we were fast to remove the " knot" but had difficulty putting it back.....we need more workshop on how to fix broken chain. We decide to abandon our plan and head for Dinas for breakfast. This is the second try by James and Yazid on this route..so they vowed to conquer it in the next try!It may be the 13th day jinx, think about it Yazid? Oooops....sorry.

Cycling into 2010

At 8.12pm instead of sending Happy New Year sms, I sent out a crazy invitation; to cycle to QB for new year countdown. James (my neighbor) and I could not resist cycle under the full moon with nice cooling breeze as we chatted outside our houses. Most could not get visa, but Arthur managed to rush his New Year shopping and party.

At 11.40pm, Arthur arrived at my house, and we immediately speed up to QB:

11:56pm: The KrystalPoint-QB flyover (beside Intel). The road was closed for us.

12:00am: They lighted up the firework the moment we arrived in QB. What a grand entrance by us.

12:15 am. We were so cool, cycling among the 2010 countdown crowd at QB. Many envy us, especially those stuck in the car, and those who had to walk very far to their car.

We conclude with late night teh tarik at Dawood.

We actually cycled into 2010. Great feeling.

Kayuhan Warisan Taiping 2009 (KaWaT'09) - 27 December 2009

It all started with a trial ride with Yazid some 6 months ago and now we are at the Taiping Jamboree,27th Dec 09, it was like a finale for 2009 with hope that it would both fun and exciting. Boy, were we for a surprise of the year.
The planning to participate in this Jamboree was a few months ago, just a feather on our hat. The day started for me at 3.30am when I got up as usual like any other jamboree full of excitement that’s too good to miss. Got ready and ask my wife to send me to Jawi Toll, in Nibong Tebal where Jaya the first time Jamboree attendee whom I recruited,( remember the guys who was to good for kapet in his first maiden ride, rode without stopping and Zul got mad at me for recruiting people who are not bike pushers) to pick me up at 6.00am. But for the rest of the team the excitement started the day before as they were loading their bikes on Kee’s lorry at 10.30pm onwards. They gathered earlier on Sunday to drive to Taiping and when I SMS’ed Sufian and Yazid at 6am they were already on the highway.
When we reached Taiping at 6.45am we assembled as usual putting on our gears getting ready to ride and the ritual of visiting the toilet before any big ride took place as usual. We were very excited about this Jamboree, as we waited and waited for the flag off which never came at 7.30am being waiting for the Menteri besar of Perak, wonder which one from UMNO or Pakatan! The riders were getting impatient and made noises which prompt the organiners to flag off without the MB. It was pleasant road ride some 10-12 KM until we reached the off road which started like the KL crawl practically inch by inch. It tooks us nearly 1 hour for the climb worst till the downhill was not ride able at all but only push-able again for another hour or so to come to the bottom. Not only that the numerous streams that we need to cross over, the pain of carrying our bikes each time we cross the river or even while coming down many riders fell down. To make things worst my gear did not work as I got to stick to frontal 2nd gear and mid gear at the back! It was both a painful and frustrating jamboree for me.
After the ride we sat down to rest before heading back home, as all of us were venting our frustrations the only member who was jovial was Kee. When quipped how he managed downhills near the streams, he said “Gua tarak tolak, gua angkat itu besikal dan lali turun bawah!”
It was one poorly managed and organized Jamboree in 2009!

Cooling windy uphill ride thru Bukit Latok make a great start followed by downhill, some exceeded speed limit hamzah and sudin particularly. B’fast at Rapid and great mental preparation to ride-up Titi Serong to Hilton, long and steep ride, really really long, that we stop talking to each other and only hearing huff and puff.

From Hilton off-road uphill and “kayuh lasak” style trail. The final downhill fr 3 towers to 1200 steps temple was worth it, From there on is pure tarmac downhill—once can feel the advantage of Hydro brake. After pit stop at Paya Terubong’s Petronas, the group went for a final climb to Relau/Sg Ara.

We met at Dinas this morning. This is a planned trip suggested by PT.

Riders this trip are: Weng Kit, KB, Tee, Suri, Suffian, KL Chan, Chun Chiat.

The ride starts with the usual route through Kenari Farmer's trail to Karpet via the rubber estate. We reach Karpet at 8:30am. Weng Kit and KB have to leave earlier due to appointment.

The remaining riders took the route down to balik pulau with Suffian and Suri leading the way.

I slipped and fell and somehow caused my front derailleurs to shift up. After this I can't shift my front gears up. :-( On my way down, my front tires punture and I delay the group by 20 mins.

We went for quick breakfast before setting out to Gertak Sanggul. After about 15 mins of road ride, we can see the intimidating view of the hill, full of banana trees.

Most riders pushed the bike up as the load is a bit heavier after breakfast.

Sifu Suffian and Suri cycled up of course.

At the top, we took some photos and went into the canopy trail.

The trail was very technical and challenging. Some paths are too muddy and will lock the tires if not careful. This trail make you feel full suspension bike is a must. Although I was too coward to take on some of the downhill paths and ended up pushing my bike down.

At the bottom of Gertak Sanggul, a kind uncle helped us to the a photo and we rode a long ride back to Sungai Ara.

Thanks to Suri and Suffian for waiting for me (I was stuck on Second gear due to earlier problem).

As part of his MTB world tour to prep for the next Red Bull challenge, this is Doug “Davy Crockett” final stop before his final gig in Whistler Mountain. He wanted the best trail, and he got it….Carpet. Less talk more action! Here it goes…

Prelude to Saturday's ride, as usual E-mails were flying around with riders asking what is the route for this Saturday. Various suggestion with some say; Gertak Sanggul,some say Kapet to Balik Pulau and some even with confusing headings for the ride on Sunday but the discussion is about the Saturday's ride!
Anyway the guys agreed to meet at Dinas at 7.30am to decide on the route, when I reached Dinas saw Azydee having teh tarik with half boiled egg and I join him for breakfast then the others started to join us. Waited for Yazid who was late as he need to attend to nature's call at the very last minute. I guess we had a total of 12riders this morning and we still could not agree on the route! Malik suggested "why not we try the bridge route to kapet" and all agreed to that, not that we knew what we are getting into but agreed nonetheless. We followed Malik on this route and as the path was wet and slippery for some of us and as usual the A team broke away from the rest with the B, C and the D team lagging behind. We did a lot of pushing along the way giving various excuses i.e the tires were spinning, someone ahead of us stopped abruptly or the path was wet so we wanted to be careful. The route was challenging but pleasant with shadowing trees along the way. When I reached Kapet, the A team was engaged in a discussion with Arthur mesmerising the audience with his oratory skill. The rest of us joined and we posed for photo session with lot of battle of words and wits with Arthur poking fun on my disappearing act during CM' ride to our performance in the BM Jamboree and even KW on his lateness to kapet not knowing that KW double back to accompany his friend.While bragging about our achievement Yazid mentioned that one of the rides amongst us was positioned # 14 and with that there was a grave silence. We knew its time for us to keep quiet!
Arthur, Idris and Malik parted way as they need to head back home early as the rest decided to go down to Balik Pulau. The ride was slow due to wet cement path and the mud path which made some of our bikes to skid, nevertheless it was a good ride till Rapid Bustop with some downhill heroes making a breakaways from the rest of the pack on the mainroad.After breakfast, KW wanted to go to Gertak Sanggul and he tried to entice others to join in but no one was willing as I guess all of us wanted to head home citing various reasons. We decided to take Pondok Upeh road towards Teluk Kumbar and Bayan Lepas. The downhill ride was fantastic with all of us racing each other but we had one clear winner; Azydee. This guy is the ultimate downhill champion in the absence of Sufian leading the pack with KW, PT , KL and Chuen Hau. Finally we reached Sg Ara-Bayan Lepas junction and headed home,it was good ride for all of us except for KW who missed his Gertak Sanggul route, no worries pal we'll do it after our Kulim Jamboree provide we do the road early morning and off road later as the the daylight nowadays is much earlier now as the transition of the sun from north to south!As Sufian will always say "panas" to which I fully agree as I am the least among you guys who needs more tan! See you guys next week at the Kayuhan Klasik Kulim...yahooooooo!

Two things happened on the 31st Oct, Saturday ride; Yazid broke his bike chain, yes again and I recruited a new member thinking he is bike pusher but he turn out to be a pro! We agreed to assemble at the temple at 7.30am but I need to meet my friends Jaya, who was interested to join us with our rides. I agreed to meet him at Dinas at 7.20am and thought to meet up with the guys later. While I was waiting for him, KW Tan came to Dinas after seeing that no one was at the temple entrance! We left Dinas and met Yazid at the temple entrance and continued the ride. Yazid and KW were leading with me and Jaya following them. The group started to separate as KW was breaking away with Yazid right behind him, Jaya and I lost them just before the rubber trees and there is where I saw Yazid with his bike parked by the side . We found that he broke his chain again, maybe for the 3 or 4th time ever since he started to ride! Yes brothers, he broke his chain again! We quickly got our hands dirty by trying to mend the broken chain, three professionals who knew nothing about repairing a broken chain used our logic and the little repairing knowledge that we had. Lucky for Yazid he brought a compact tool set that came in handy, we tried everything to make it connect but to no avail! Some other rides looking that we are struggling with the broken chain gave us an easy clip on chain connector, which we thought was a blessing in disguise but none of us knew how to use it, including them! We tried every other way to understand how to use it, with everyone giving how it should be done but finally agreed to revert back to the old way to repair the chain.

We were joined in by KW, who came back after reaching the foothill of Kapet wondering why all of the sudden all of us were nowhere at sight! The four of us tried everything to mend the broken chain, with each trying to outdo the other, one by one tried but we were not successful. This is where we dearly missed Suri and Idris!

Surprisingly Ling How, YES the one and only Ling How, who claim that he never rides on Saturday joined us and gave his expert opinion on how to mend the chain. This time around we became bit creative with combining the clip on with the chain and managed to mend the broken chain. Congrats to the team to successfully mending the broken chain for the first time.

We continued the ride after that until reaching Kapet! The second surprise was that Jaya whom I recruited thinking that being a new comer would be pushing the bike like others, but the plan failed miserably as he never pushed the bike but cycled comfortably until reaching kapet. Yes he did finish it on his maiden ride to kapet without pushing. Sorry abang Zul, for recruiting a wrong person into our Bike Pushers Gang thinking that we could have another member! Once we reached kapet we’re debating to turn back or go down to Balik Pulau, we managed to convince all including Ling How to join us to Balik Pulau. While going downhill my back brake jammed which caused my wheels to skid hence I stopped and allowing the others to ride first just not to cause any problems them. It was an interesting ride downhill and upon reaching Balik Pulau, breakfast as usual. After breakfast we continued to ride back via Pondok Upeh, Malihom,Teluk Kumbar and reached Sg Ara close to 12.00noon. Coming down hill was a joy to all of us, with KW gone out of sight as he need to go back home earlier. It was a good ride for all of particularly for Ling How who joined us for the first time I think! As for Jaya, first time ever doing, Kapet, Balik Pulau and Pondok Upeh route, never a bike pusher member have done it on his pioneer ride! Congratulations buddy and hope you’ll join us in more rides in the future and I also managed to convince Jaya and and KW to join us for the Taiping Jamboree in Dec 09!

Ride on the 29th Oct

KW Tan, Ling How and I decided to ride on Thursday the 29th Oct and we agreed to meet at the Temple entrance between 6.00-6.15pm. When I reached at 6.20pm realized that KW and LH was not at sight and thinking that they may have gone ahead as we agreed that if we are not there by the time we’ll catch each other on the way up or down. I started to ride alone and after 5minutes, I heard a voice calling me a “lone ranger” and upon turning I realised that it was KW greeting me. We cycled for a while and I told KW that I do not want to hold him back as he is not only an avid rider but a “Class A” rider as well! He rides fast going uphill or downhill!
He went ahead of me, after a while Ling How joined me at the rubber tree entrance, we cycled together and mid way we met Suffian and Azydee riding down who told us that KW is ahead of us. After parting ways, just about at the vegetable farm , it started to pour heavily, Ling How and I stopped for a while at the hut and was joined in by the farmer who called it a day. While he and Ling How was chatting away in hokkien, I told LH that I’ll go to check on KW as I just realized that the guy had no head light. I rode halfway till kapet and called upon KW’s name but no response and I waited for while as I was not sure if KW is still on top or he turned back using the Cherry Blossom route. As I was turning back, I heard KW’s voice and it was relief to see him and we were worried about him riding without lights!
We rode back together to meet LH at the hut where he was sheltering himself and the three of us cycled together with me heading the pack and KW in the middle and LH at the back as he was the only one with the full spec with both head light and back light. It was a slow descend downhill with each giving direction to one another. It was the slowest downhill ride ever for me and it was both fun and nerve wrecking experience coming down the route while it was raining heavily and in total darkness. We managed to come down safely and upon reaching the temple entrance, all of us looked at each other with a sense of achievement and grin in our faces! Talking about man and mid age crisis!
